Misty and I have had a gen 1 Sirius Sportster radio for a few years now. It was given to us by Micah and Laura several Christmases ago. It has traveled thousands of miles with us and we've loved it dearly.
About a month ago it started crapping out on us. No signal, low signal, and it gradually got worse until it just had no signal at all. Then I tried docking it in the beetle and it worked perfectly. So I figured the antenna on the Treg was shot. We hit Best Buy and a new antenna is $50. So we bought a new Stiletto receiver and a the new dock that goes along with it. We've wanted a newer receiver that could record, etc.
So I install the new antenna and new dock in the Treg. Dock the new unit, annnnnd........... no signal. Recheck the antenna alignment, connections..... no signal. I hook the newly installed antenna to the dock for the old receiver.... works perfect. Full bars.
The new receiver works fine on its own outside the dock (it has its own internal antenna for walking around with it). So what the fuck? The new dock is defective? I dunno what else to check. The old unit works w/ the new antenna. So why the hell doesn't the new one work? I am so frustrated. I've spent my entire night dicking with this and I have nothing to show for it. Argh.
Guess tomorrow I'll pack up all the shit that came with the new dock (sans antenna, because I am NOT tearing that wiring out AGAIN and then installing another one AGAIN) and then heading back to Best Buy to swap it.
I am a sad sad panda.
When I can't sleep I often pace. Its a habit I developed about fifteen years ago (I figured that out tonight) when my folks were splitting up and I had trouble sleeping. I'd get up in the middle of the night and just wander around thinking about whatever came into my head. Its a habit I've carried on without really giving it much thought.
So I've been up the better part of an hour pacing the house, thinking about everything from how I got started in computers to how I need to paint the corner of that doorframe in the kitchen. Usually after a couple hours the wandering tires me out and I can sleep. My feet hurt so I'm taking a break.
There are all sorts of things I'd like to write down, but none of it seems particularly worth it right now. Most of it is the type of stuff my buddy Micah and I would spend talking about well into the wee hours of the morning when we would wander the parking lot of the Extended Stay in Metairie while we were working that project from Hell in Louisiana. Random ideas about how things should work, how we were going to code something that would change the world, etc. It seems we never really came up with any decent ideas, or never did anything about the ones we did. It always seems you need X, Y, and Z to get started, and we never could figure out how to get all that together. We never were and still aren't very good businesspeople. We could almost always fix or build whatever you wanted though. Its funny how much I both do and don't miss those days.
Maybe I'll wander downstairs and see if anybody is on Teamspeak. It occurs to me that now that some of our friends live on the west coast, its actually possible they're still up. My Macbook, while awesome, still doesn't talk back.
stay around for the slo-mo. and notice the can of gasoline in the corner.

also, the best tetris game ever:
... pleased to be finding of the sleep.
can't sleep. listening to some guy 300 miles away running 100 watts on 2meters keying up the Bluemont repeater. no idea why he's running so much power on 2m, but its funny. i can only hear one side of the conversation because he's talking on the repeater input frequency. he's so far away he doesn't realize he's keying up the repeater up here. at midnight the PL tone will start being required and then the repeater shouldn't key up.
I've been messing around with PSK31 the past couple nights. its pretty neat, I got everything set up so I could actually monitor some QSOs. I caught a couple from S. America and Canada, and several from the southern US. Need to upgrade my license and equipment so I can transmit in this mode.
Mr. 100 watts finally changed frequencies so now all is quiet. I could work on some work stuff, but I don't really feel like doing that either. I don't really feel like doing anything. But I can't fall asleep either. Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
Packet furthered his reputation as a goat-dog today by eating about half a teaspoon of gunpowder after finding his way into some unused mortar shells from the fourth of July. I've resisted the temptation to shake him up.
He didn't get into what is probably the really nasty stuff in the main part, just the propellant. I suspect he just wanted to chew on the cardboard. The gunpowder tastes awful. (Don't ask).
Figured I'd throw something out since I haven't posted in awhile. Not a lot going on. Went to the company picnic on Saturday. Had a pretty good time, although the place they rented out was too small for the number of people we had.
Watched the race today. Jeff opened up his lead to > 300 points over second. Not bad. Uneventful race. They can't all be thrilling.
That's about all I got. Been doing some work around the house. Just figured I'd let everybody know I'm still alive.
Any of my friends in the cell business know much about how Sprint does (or doesn't) allow j2me apps access to the media APIs?
Specifically I'm trying to get this app: http://www.sitex.com.ua/en/products/mWebPlayer/support.htm to work on an A900. When attempting to play music the phone throws a java exception "Stream Player Error: cannot prepare player1: Application not authorized to access the restricted API"
I've done some digging around and seen that homebrew GPS developers have been successful in using QPST to install their own root CA on the phone and then self-signing their apps. The GPS APIs require a signed app to work. This does not appear to be the case with this situation, as I did all the same shit tonight and it still doesn't work. Its possible I just got it wrong. Anyway, if anybody has any insight I'd appreciate it. Mikey, I'm looking at you. :-p
